We left Memphis yesterday; our destination was Vicksburg,
MS. Along the way we were able to see
the cotton fields of the Mississippi delta area. It brought to life some of the information
that we learned at the Cotton Museum! Some of the plants were in full bloom, some
were ready to be plowed over and some were just beginning to bloom. We actually stopped at one field to get a
better look and take some pictures.
Cotton blooms look like several cotton balls on a stem. And they feel as soft as them, too! I guess we are never too old to learn
something new!
With a bit more knowledge, I can say that the cotton plant does bloom with a flower. It starts as a white flower and then turns pink and then darker pink, all within a few days. Then the boll grows at that site. The boll, with a brown and hard exterior, is where the cotton begins to grow. When the boll "pops", it opens with the bright white "cotton balls" that look so soft and make the field look so beautiful.
