One word comes to mind while driving through NJ. It is TWP. The first question: IS it a word? Could I use it in scrabble? I know what it means; it means township. I am not sure how I know it means township. I feel that I have known for a long time – long before I could have done a Google search!!
But, why does T-W-P mean township. I mean it is not intuitively obvious to me. It is not all the consonants. It is not every other letter. It is not even the main letters of the two words that make it up.
I also don’t know how to pronounce it.. Is it “twip”. Or do you say “tee-double u- pee. I guess you are supposed to say township. But, as the signs fly by, I don’t have enough time to say township. So, I just say “twip”.
I still don’t know if I can use it in Scrabble. But, I do know that NJ has a lot of TWP’s.
