Red Sox Spring Training - 2011

Well Spring Training is just about done. Real baseball starts on March 31 and the Red Sox play Texas on April 1 - go Sox. We went to a number of games this spring and watched a few on TV. Watching at the park and on TV are different. When at the park you can pay attention to particular aspects of the game that the TV control booth may not find interesting. Certainly on TV you have the instant replay that is not available when at the park. One park advantage is watching a ball come toward where you are sitting - can you catch it or should you just duck. At the City of Palms park here in Fort Myers there is a lawn area down the right field line that gets many balls during batting practice and during the game. The foul line is something like 15 to 20 feet from the seating area - one needs to pay attention when sitting there. Here are some pictures from the practice facility. We got to watch the players going thorough their workouts before the spring training games started.

As has been the case in the past the WEEI morning show was also broadcast from the training facility for 10 days.

This spring we have seen a number of players that are not going to be on the major league roster on opening day, but I suspect that we will see them during the year as injuries occur.

Our defense looks pretty good and the offense is likely to be fantastic -at least I hope so. Pitching on the other hand is going to be a wait-and-see. It appears that towards the end there was a change in DiceK's routine and all of a sudden he is looking like a real pitcher - we can only hope that it continues. Becket may be better than last year, but not as good as we might like - another wait-and-see situation.
